Is it for attention? (An emo-cutting question...)?

Hey there.

So one of my friends has over the past half year, become 'emo'. Died his ginger hair black, wears all black... even fish-net elbow length gloves... (He's gone the whole mile, I'll admit).

Now he had a brief period of cutting himself and had a few trips to the hospital but stopped it once he got a girlfriend (Who is also 'emo').

Now they've broken up and its all quite messy, he's now back to cutting himself real bad this time. He says its because he's really depressed (He was on anti-depressents)... But he's just posted photos of the deep mother of a cut he did to himself on one arm and the 20 or so 'zebra strips' on the other on his bebo profile.

I'm awfully confused, is that normal behaviour for someone when their doing that? Is he not telling me everything and just doing it for attention? Please - any advise would be greatful.

(By the way he HAS been to the hospital for these cuts, theres photos of the stitching, etc...)

my friend was like, in a reeally similar situation. i think it could be that at the time they cut themselves they really are upset or whatever, but afterwards they show it off just for attention. they just want people to realise they are in so much emotional pain that they are doing such a dramatic thing and harming themselves.

I've had a few friends in this situation. You need to alert someone about it. Cutting is one of the most common things for people that are depressed nowadays, and it can be helped/avoided if you help them get help. I recently helped my really good guy friend quit, and he hasn't in over a year. Just tell someone
