Would this haircut work for some one with massively thick hair?

Well maybe not as thick as that sounded I think. When my hair was longer(current hairstyle is simailar to my yahoo avatar), when it was and always was in a ponytail, the diameter was probaly 1.5 to 2 inches thick I recall.

Hold on. Not done. So ignore that ponytail that is over her left shoulder and picture her hair length going lower just below the chin.

So basically, I want her hair chin length with all those strands sticking up but I don't know if thick hair would allow me to do that so there you have it.

Honestly, it doesn't matter if your hair is too thick because they can thin it to make it work. The question is if your hair is too fine. That is what would be difficult with this style. I think its super cute though!
