Emo Stereotype Breakdown?

"People who wear tight jeans, have hair in front of their face, wear too much make-up, cut themselves, cry alot, are too emotional, wear thick black rimmed glasses. The guys act like girls. They are mostly gay." The normal stereotype of an "emo" right? Ok, let's break this down

1.)"They wear tight pants" Ok, so how many people have worn tight pants in their lifetime and are NOT emo?

2.)"They have hair in front of their face" That is just too stupid, so many people have fringes now

3.)"They wear too much make-up" Alot of people wear so much make-up that they look almost plastic and aren't considered emo.

4.)"cut themselves" you have got to be kidding me!? How dare someone put this under a label. A person who wears bright happy colors can cut just as much as someone who is "emo".

5.) "They cry alot" So do babies, how many "emo" babies do you know?

6.) "they are too emotional" Or over emotional, people who are 6 years old can be emotional, do you know any "emo" 6 year olds?

EMO = another ignorant stereotype created by ignorant ppl who feel it necessary to generalize and simplify a group of ppl

for their own convenience instead of expanding their narrrow minds and accepting that you cannot box someone into a 3 letter word. emo = doesnt exist.

Emo Stereotype Breakdown?

Thats all fair enough.

You have to understand, being emo is a trend! Trends have (for lack of a better word) "rules" It's as simple as that. You have to follow these rules (wear the clothes etc) or else you wouldn't be emo.

Okay some emo's may not cut themselves etc - but they know by dressing emo - they will be put under the same category. If it bothers them why dress like that.

Being emo is conforming, not being different. If you wanna be different, dress how YOU feel, don't dress to be cool.

Emo's come on here a lot and say why do you guys hate us etc. If emo was a real way to "rebel" and be different. You would NOT give a flying hoot about what I or anyone else says about it. Youd just let people say what they want and not let it phase you - thats what people who are different do.

Emo Stereotype Breakdown?

From what I've seen, and been told by emo's themselves: an emo boy for example is a teen or young adult boy who

1) Wears not just tight jeans...you forgot something....many where tight girls jeans and other subtle female accessories. Sure, crossdressers wear girls clothing too, but they usually go extreme while emo's dress dark and are more subtle.

2) Emo boys wear their hair dryed black and long and very girlish. Many guys today do this too, but many of those same guys don't wear tight girls pants and dress dark along with it.

3) Most women wear makeup, but most boys don't, but many emo boys do. And they wear it uniquely. Clowns wear makeup too, but not everyone who wears make up is a clown either.

4) I've heard some cut themselves. Sure, many different kinds of guys cut themselves but they don't all where nothing but black, long girly hair, and tight girls pants, etc. And they don't all relate to the problems many emo boys have that they relate with in each other.

5) They whine a lot, Yes, babies do too, but babies are also not a teen boy who where's tight girls pants, long black girly hair, etc etc.

6) Most guys are not emotional like girls on extreme Pms most of the time. Many emo boys are. Thats the difference.

7) They act like girls, and yes, it matters. Apparently it matters to them sense they do that and call themselves Emo. Your probably not emo, so whats it to you?

8) They are mostly gay or bisexual. Yes, anyone can be gay, but not everyone dresses mostly black, wear long girlish hair, girls pants, listens mostly to EMo music, etc etc.

9) They listen to something they labeled called, "emotional music". Don't ask me, they labeled it. Ask the actual bands if they themselves are emo and label their own music that way.

Are you mad that emo's exist and labeled themselves this way??? Just so you know, I never knew what an Emo was until I met a few in person, and saw a lot on the internet. They almost all fit all of the above and called themselves Emo. I don't hate them, I think some are cool like any other person. Afterall, they're just people who labeled themselves differently in this way. I think anyone who discriminates against them are ignorant. I also see nothing wrong with accepting how the present themselves.

By the way, "Emo" isn't a label I created, it's a label Emo's created for themselves.

EDIT: About your "black clothes" remark. If someone says, "if you wear black, your emo", they most likely are saying that based on the discussion of discribing an emo. Clearly if someone said, " if you wear a police outfit, then your policeman", makes no sense out of context. But if your telling someone, that in general, "if you need help from autorities, look for the people in a police outfit, if they wear a police outfit, they're probably policemen", that phrase makes more sense. Just like saying, " in the club, when you see guys who look like girls with long girly black hair, in tight girls jeans, goth-like makeup, and look sad, they might be emo.....oh, and if they wear black". In that context, it makes more sense.

Emo Stereotype Breakdown?

I totally agree with you. its all sterotyping.. i wear dark colors and my favorite color is black...usually people who wear black like about 24/7 is mostly gothic not emo. also wearing tight pants. that's just because with most people it feels comfortable to them and it fits them the best just like how some poeple likes saggy loose pants... crying alot well thats true about babies. they can't help it. they can't talk at all. so crying is a way to talk to their parents if they need something... people who have hair in front of their face- well haven't people heard of bangs.. gosh. sometimes i like my hair in front of my face but usaully it is in my face to proctect my fave from the rain/snow and the rain.. wearing black rimmed glasses... soo its just glasses maybe that person didn't like any other glasses style and choose the black rimed ones.
