What is the difference between goth and a emo?

Ok, I am completely confused on "goth" and "emo". There are students in my school who at the beginning of the year nobody was a "goth" or "emo". Then one kid died his hair black. Two weeks later he came to school with pants covered in chains. Soon it spreeded like a disease. But get this, none of them are depresed, none of them cut them selves, and none of them want to kill them selves. If you ask me, there all hypocrites.

Ok heres the point. They all say there "emo", so can some one tell me what the difference is so that try to talk some sence in to them.

For starters you don't have to be depressed or cutting to be an emo or a Goth(even though that is how I became one.) I get what you are saying as that phase when through my school for 2 years and it is only just going out of style now. It really is pathetic how people put on the facade of the next "in" thing and they just drop it when it goes out of style. Emo is lighter than Goth and it revolves around Emo music more such as Escape The Fate.They also tend to be soft-core where as with Goths they tend to be hard-core and revolve around Goth music such as Within Temptation.Then again it all comes down to the sub-groups of each.There are many sub-groups to Goths and the occasional one is very much like emo and there are also many sub-groups for emos and the occasional one is very much like Goth. There are so many differences and similarities between Goths and Emos that I could not possible list them all down here.
