Question about Emo and Emo People?

One part of me doesn't get emo people and that part is, why do they dress up the way they do? Cut their hair like the emo style, dress up that way, everything

(I dont mean this in ANY OFFENSIVE way)

One part of me that understands emo is I heard they have had loss in their life that caused them to turn that way and I respect that part, but has emo been around for a long time or is it kind of new? what causes people to become emo??

and this is a compliment to some emo girls, I find emo girls very cute in a way and I actually like the hairstyle but you know not the emo look, I respect your choice of lifestyle so respect mine too, I don't like emo people but I respect them as human beings and I don't really find them mean but very rough and depressing people

Emo has no style of it's own. They actually steal the scene style (big hair, skinny jeans (which came from the 80's)) and mall goth (which is really a faux-rebellion thing for angsty teens).

I personally LOVE scene hair. It's the cutest thing.

Emo is old. It began around 1984 with Husker Du's album "Zen Arcade". Rites of Spring and Moss Icon are well known in the Emo community. It was originally short for Emotive-Hardcore, an offshoot of the 80's DC punk scene. These bands have the punk sound, but SLIGHTLY softened down and with deeper lyrics. Real punks started using Emo as an insult. Emo died in the 90's, at which point (presumably) some journalist got a hold of this label and decided to start using it to seem unique or something. Anyway, it invaded the mainstream. What is called Emo now is actually pop-punk (and sometimes indie and alternative metal). Thanks to the media, people think that this is synonymous with depression and means Emotional. THIS IS FALSE. I couldn't believe that I searched Ebsco (a search engine trusted by schools for reliable info) for "emo" and it was all pure pop-punk BS! One article was about how Emo is Emotional Goth. GAH.

What causes someone to be Emo? Personal choice. Peer pressure. Media brain-washing. It's sad really.

Every person is different. Emo is really a style of music that was popular in the 80's but not so much now. I guess there is a style called emo. But really not all emo's are depressed and sad or had something tragic happen to them. People dress that way because they like the style and the hair.

Okay i'm not FULL on emo but i am part emo (scene if you will). why do i dress like this? because i want to, i don't care i started dressing like this before stupid scene posers. Emo has been around since the 1990's the music came before. Causes of emo well i don't know one's liking.

okay you have the wrong emo. Emo is a stereotype. It's a type of music back them and it's called emo because of emotional lyrics (e.g. dashboard confessionals). Emo people came after. NOT all emos are depress or cut htemselves we're mostly happy people who aren't mean and rough. you don't always judge people as ONE thing and have to be that ONE thing. they're everything and you never know.

Yeah, I don't really know either..but, my cousin is emo and she told me it stands for emotional. Idk, we had a loss in our family about 2 yrs ago, and then she started cutting herself and I think that's when she turned emo, so that loss in the family could be true for some. Now, everytime I see her, she has all black and occasionally brighter colors on. She has like color in her hair and everything too. Maybe some just like their style lol idk. I used to get freaked by them (NO OFFENSE, EMO'S), but I see my cousin every now and then and we are both 14, and I realize she is really a nice person and that she just sees life in a different way. I'm totally preppy pretty much and she's emo, but we still get a long fine..she just has different outlooks on things than I do. lol

my problum is people going around saying "im emo"... no.. okay emo's dont do that, and i hate it when people say there "part" emo, or "almost" emo cause its stuiped. u can like to dress in black, thats fine, then u like the emo style, doesnt make u emo

I know some emo's that havent had big losses. If that was the case, EVERYONE would be an emo. but yeah, i think the emo style has been around a kind of while. think of it this way, girly girls wear all pink accessories and clothes. Emos are the same, they just wear all black.

Emos used to be that way because they were messed up. Like in the 80s they were the people on drugs that nobody cared about or messed with.

Now everyone just does it because they think it looks different and cool. Only problem is now that everyone is doing it, there's nothing different about it. Emos have once again been stereotyped by their clothes.
